Honoring God with Our Capital

Honor is a heart issue. When we honor something, we allow it to influence us heavily. Likewise, when we honor someone, we take their advice to heart, making it the final authority in our lives. We give them the utmost respect.

God and His Word are one, and we cannot honor Him without honoring His Word. And when we honor God, He will honor us. On the other hand, in those areas where we refuse to give His Word priority, we will be lightly esteemed by Him (1 Samuel 2:30). Throughout the Bible, He tells us the ways in which we can reverence Him, which includes honoring Him with our capital (finances).

For example, Proverbs 3:9-10 in the Amplified Bible says, “Honor the Lord with your capital and sufficiency [from righteous labors] and with the firstfruits of all your income; So shall your storage places be filled with plenty, and your vats shall be overflowing with new wine.” In other words, one way we demonstrate our respect for God is by giving first fruit offerings (the best portion of any additional income we may receive). This scripture also tells us that honoring God with our money causes us to have financial abundance.

Here are a few other ways we can honor God with our capital:

  • We honor Him by not robbing Him of the tithe, which is a tenth of all of our income (Malachi 3:10).
  • We also honor Him by supporting His causes, which include giving financially to churches and ministries that give to the poor, spread the Gospel, and teach people how to live their lives according to God’s Word.

As Believers, we cannot listen to the words of those who live by society’s standards—those who may tell us that investing in the Kingdom of God is ridiculous. That is far from the truth. There is honor that only God can give us. However, we can only experience this honor when we give His Word priority in our lives. And unlike the success that comes from society, the success we receive from God has no strings attached to it.

Many times, we see others prospering in the world or society and think their prosperity is true prosperity. However, it is not. True prosperity comes from God, in the form of His blessing. The blessing of the Lord makes us rich, and there is no sorrow with it (Proverbs 10:22). Further, His provision not only frees us from the sorrows of the world, it also overflows into other areas of our lives because the blessing is an empowerment to prosper in every area of our lives. In other words, God’s blessing gives us total life prosperity, which is more than acquiring money and material things.

When we honor God, we become recipients of the blessing. Therefore, I encourage you to read Proverbs 3:9-10 out loud, over and over, on a daily basis until it takes root in your heart. Then you, too, will enjoy the benefits of honoring God with your capital.

Proverbs 3:9-10

New King James Version (NKJV)

Honor the Lord with your possessions,
And with the firstfruits of all your increase;
10 So your barns will be filled with plenty,
And your vats will overflow with new wine.
